Planning and The Duty To Involve

08.03.2010

The Great Unknown: Planning and the Duty to Involve

24th May 2010, Bircham Dyson Bell, London

The 2007 Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act has significant implications for local authority planners. On 1st April 2009 Section 138 of the Act brought into force the Duty to Involve. This takes the form of an addition to the best value provisions of the Local Government Act 1999 and applies to all best value authorities in England.

This duty is an addition to existing consultation requirements, it requires local authorities to look further at how they involve local people, looking at how easily people can access and understand information and tailoring the information to different audiences to support involvement.

Establishing an evidence base is essential for underpinning the long term vision for an area and is essential as a means of providing justification for policies in local plans, particularly innovative policies which may go beyond the scope of government guidance.

This conference aimed at local authority planners looks at how authorities can meet the requirements set out under the duty to involve and how this can be built into an evidence base.

Whether you are preparing documents for an LDF, organising a consultation, or updating information on the Council's website this conference provides an essential grounding in how to implement the new requirements.

The seminar will cover the following:

  • Section 138 of the Act and its implications for all aspects of planning
  • Understanding the depth and width of the evidence base required for the Local Development Framework
  • Establishing an authority wide evidence base
