In 2006 James was appointed to the Conservative front bench as a Shadow Home Affairs Minister. James previously served as a member of the Constitutional Affairs Select Committee. As Shadow Crime Reduction Minister, James is responsible for helping to develop Conservative policy on issues relating to gun and gang crime, knife crime, drug crime, anti-social behaviour, fraud and on-line crime.
Cindy has been a member of the MPA since 2000. She is a member of the Home Secretary's gun crime round table, a long-standing member of the Operation Trident Independent Advisory Group, and chairs the London-wide Crown Prosecution Service Hate Crime Panel.
How to better engage the public in fighting crime is an important topic that has been highlighted of late by innovative studies such as the 'Engaging Communities in Fighting Crime' review, produced by Louise Casey (former head of the government's Respect Task Force). This project's conclusion was that radical change is needed to get the public more engaged in tackling crime and to halt the erosion of community spirit.
