Research Councils UK (RCUK) have commissioned Involve to conduct a review of RCUK dialogue and consultation exercises. The Research Councils have a good deal of experience of public dialogues. Various independent dialogues have been conducted around major RCUK research areas such as nanotechnology, geoengineering and synthetic biology.
This review aims to foster collective learning across the Research Councils about the impact of these dialogues. The main objective of the review is to characterise the range of common and differing views and responses of the public. In addition to reviewing the content of the discussions, the review will also examine the effectiveness of different dialogue and consultation methods.
The learning from these past dialogues will inform the RCUK’s future public engagement practices. Our advice will include recommendations as well as a set of resources to support the Research Councils to ensure future dialogues are influential and cost effective.
In delivering this project we are partnering with the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge and Dr. Jack Stilgoe, Senior Research Fellow at Exeter University Business School.
