Using deliberative engagement to make small businesses more sustainable

SME Deliberative Engagement

By Clive Mitchell

Clive Mitchell is Head of Operations at Involve.

Involve worked with Leeds Beckett University and various partners across Europe to deliver a project that aimed to help small and medium-sized businesses to be more sustainable and resilient. Part of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme, the project was funded with support from the European Commission. It used deliberative engagement methods to engage business leaders in developing solutions to some of the complex problems they face. The project aimed to create self-sustaining and collaborative communities across businesses and the Higher Education sector. You can visit the project website here.

Involve led on the deliberative engagement elements of the project. The project outputs included a short, practical guide for using deliberative engagement with small and medium-sized businesses and an overall synthesis report for the project including implications for EU-wide policy.

In March 2016 the project partners ran a webinar which summarised the findings and explored some of the challenges of using deliberative engagement in a business setting. The webinar can be accessed here.
