Elizabeth Nelson

Senior Project Officer

Elizabeth joined Involve as a Senior Project Officer in September 2025, supporting the design and delivery of a wide range of participatory projects across the UK.

Liz cut her participatory teeth as a youth worker, conducting action research projects with young people from underserved communities around Belfast. This work instilled in her the importance of involving the people who will be most impacted by a decision into the process, an ethos that has driven everything she’s done since.

More recently, before joining Involve, she was Public Engagement and Impact Manager with the Administrative Data Research Centre Northern Ireland (ADRC NI, a partnership of Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University), devoting more than a decade to engaging publics and communities in data-driven research and decision-making. She developed a novel approach to co-production of data research with experts by experience, changing the way data-driven researchers work with the people whose lives make up their datasets. Liz is passionate about democratising data and championing the public voice, and is co-Founder of the Northern Ireland Public Data Panel (NIPDP).

Liz studied political science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and earned a Master of Laws in Human Rights Law from Queen’s University Belfast. She’s a proud founding member of the Belfast Feminist Network, representing BFN on the Board of Directors of the Human Rights Consortium which campaigns for a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland.

Outside of work you can find Liz running (often after her two kids), sea swimming, reading, and writing short stories and a novel she promises she will finish someday!
