Are you living in the Outer Hebrides? Come along to our two-day course on Community Conversations.

You will learn how to engage community members in discussions that affect your communities, such as climate change. You will also learn how to navigate any arising tension and complex dynamics in a way where all voices are heard, and relationships are strengthened.

This training is for you if:

  • You are working in a role that requires making change happen
  • You need to facilitate practical conversations and decision-making processes
  • You are guiding and supporting individuals and groups to decide what matters most to them.
  • You want practical tools and processes, not just theory, and a space where we can practice these tools together with support and advice.

Day one of the training - We will start with looking at edges and triggers and learning how to become more aware of these in ourselves and in groups and how these affect group dynamics. We will explore some fun examples of situations that crop up in group conversations, experiences which we have all had when in a meeting or decision making process. Through this we will learn about the concept of resistance behaviour and how this gives us lots of useful information to help reduce the impact of tension and difficulty in 1:1 and group conversations.

Day two is all about practising what we’ve learned on day one and learning some new tools to use when setting up and facilitating a difficult conversation or decision-making process, in both 1:1 and group situations.

We will explore a simple and effective 4 step process to gain a wide range of views and also find the alternate or opposing views. We will learn how to support groups to see issues from multiple viewpoints, and how gaining the wisdom in the ‘NO’ , leads to increased trust and stronger, more resilient relationships.

Finally, we will explore a different kind of debate, for when you do need to make a decision yourself, or support a group to do so. We will learn how to get from viewpoints to a decision, and then how to make it a decision that everyone can come along with.

We're running a taster session on the 20th of May, where you can learn more, experience some of the tools and ask any questions you may have on the sessions we're running in June. (Please note, this session is only available to those living in the Outer Hebrides.)
